Tiger Grapplers Advance to Regional
Written By TSN Staff on Thursday, February 4, 2010
As the sun tried to make its first appearance in many days, Warsaw wrestlers entered the depths of the Plymouth gym for sectionals. Months of training and weeks of controlled diets were about to put to test.
The first 2 Tiger grapplers were DeMarcus Gibson and Jeff Perky. Both would face Zebras from Rochester. Sophomore Gibson found himself in early trouble against senior Ryan Bohr narrowly avoiding a pin in the first period. Unfortunately, Gibson found himself cradled and pinned with just a few seconds left in the 2nd round.
Perkey dropped his match against Cody Gamble (who had a better record coming into the match) 5-1 at the end of regulation.
Rusty Carlson took an early lead over Culver Military Academy's (CMA) Austin Pegg 2-0. Just when it appeared that Carlson had the pin, Pegg rolled through the grip. Carlson would have to force Pegg back to the mat a few more times until he could get the pin with only 18.9 seconds left in the first period.
Luis Munoz lifted Wawasee's Garrett Freel (both freshman) into a fireman's carry right off. Freel reversed for 2 points. Both wrestlers would trade points until Munoz found himself taking a quick chock that knocked some wind out of his sails. But once he shook off the pain, he would go on to win his match 13-5.
About the same time, Jordan Horney would pit wits against another Warrior, Kyle Clevenger. Horney jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first go 'round. Clevenger would only last until the 2nd period as Horney put on his better moves for this match to take the pin.
Highlights of the day included Paul Manbu sporting a 30-3 record and Jarred Brooks entering the arena with a perfect 25-0. By the end of this day, these two studs would bundle, cradle, carry, paddle and inflict pain on every opponent to win their sectional titles.
Kyle Duzan and Everado Ahuati would end up enjoying 2nd place titles for the day with 4th place finishes for Horney and Munoz. Manbu, Brooks and these guys will all advance to Regionals on Wednesday up at Jimtown.
Congratulations to 6th place finishes for Zac Erba, Donald Stage and Ross Hoover as they helped the team place 3rd overall for the day.
Nice job, Tigers!
