WARSAW – Warsaw capped off its eighth straight sectional title and 32nd overall crown with a shutout of its rivals, Wawasee, in a 5-0 final Saturday morning at the Warsaw Boys Tennis Sectional.
After playing to just a 3-2 decision during the regular season round robin match, Warsaw ramped up its play to record the shutout. The road, however, was not as simple.
Three of the five courts went three sets, leaving the match in doubt until the end. Caleb Williams had the shortest road of the three setters, going 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 on Zach Leedy at No. 1. In the No. 2 singles setup, Trey Williams and Holden Babb went as deep as they could go, with Williams closing out a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) slugfest. One doubles was also a long road, with Will Boren and Michael Ray working through a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 winner on Grant Brooks and Blaine Baut.
The other two Warsaw courts left the Tigers in good shape to get just one of the three to clinch. At No. 3 singles, Northern Lakes Conference champion Hayden Anderson took out Devon Kuhn one and one, Kuhn playing in place of an injured Jack Gibbons. At two dubs, Carter Schuh and Cole Rhodes continued on with a one and one victory over Zeke Keim and Colin Rhoades.
Warsaw joins four sectional champions at the Culver Academy Regional, where all four teams were the sectional hosts and champions. The Tigers will play Peru Tuesday opposite Culver Academy and Bremen in the regional semis. The regional championship is set for Wednesday.
