MISHAWAKA - For the second straight year, the Warsaw Tigers boys soccer team is regional champion, scoring early and holding on for a 1-0 victory over Penn Saturday night at Baker Park.
The Tigers jumped out early to take the lead, just as they did in the semifinal victory over Concord - a game that went to PKs with the Tigers pulling through - and behind some solid goal play by David Johnson and support from his backs and midfield, Warsaw survived a physical battle against the Kingsmen.
Warsaw's lead came on the toe of Nathan Kolbe at the 12th minute. After a scramble in the box after a short direct kick, Jared Stout slid a short pass over to Kolbe where he was able to turn and blast a shot at the far post past a diving Penn goal keeper.
The game was fairly even with Warsaw holding a 6-5 shot advantage over the Kingsmen, but Johnson worked for every one of his three saves and he came up big by coming out and stopping several Penn crosses and deep passes into the box.
Warsaw, now 17-3-1, advances to meet Carroll, a 1-0 overtime winner over Homestead in the second game of the Warsaw Semistate. Noblesville (15-3-2) and Crown Point (13-6-2) will meet in the 10am matchup. The two winners will square off at 7pm for a berth to the state finals at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.
