FISHERS – Warsaw concluded an outstanding girls rugby competition season with a state championship Monday afternoon.

The Warsaw girls rugby team won the Rugby Indiana State Championship title with two wins over the weekend, beating Penn, 31-17, on Saturday in the semi-state, then taking down previously undefeated Indianapolis Arsenal Tech, 34-12, in Monday’s championship.

Hannah Garcia was a monster in the championship game against Tech, scoring three tries before halftime to give her club a 19-5 lead at the break. Following an Arsenal try coming out of halftime to cut the lead to 19-12, Abby Overmeyer added separation for Warsaw with a successful try to move the score to 24-12.

Garcia and Estefani Ramirez then nailed down the title for Warsaw with successive tries to put the match, and the championship, in Warsaw hands.

Warsaw’s Whitney Boren was named the tournament MVP.

Warsaw’s title adds to a seventh-place finish at nationals, a championship at the Carolina Ruggerfest, and a national ranking within the Top 25 clubs in the United States.

“I was really happy with how well the team played,” stated Warsaw rugby head coach Trevor Cracknell Tuesday morning. “It started with the Carolina Ruggerfest and just went the whole season. We played phenomenal this weekend to win state. This is a great group of young ladies. To achieve what they did, playing national-level teams, then beating an undefeated team for the title, their performance was just very pleasing.

“We had eight strong seniors that made our foundation, but we also have a very strong freshman and sophomore group as well,” continued Cracknell. “They put together a great season, and a phenomenal way to close it out with the championship.”
