11 young ladies from the Warsaw team were selected to represent Indiana at the Midwest High School Select Side Challenge last weekend which was held in St Charles, Illinois. The Midwest Challenge brings together select sides from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, and Michigan to compete for the coveted Challenge trophy.

The Indiana state select side brings together the best players from high school girls rugby teams from all over the state and is split into two age groups, Under 19 and under 17 years, with the U19 squad playing for the Challenge trophy. Brooke Netherland and Katy Cobb, who will both go into their Senior year this fall, were selected for the Under 19's squad. With under class men Allyson Walls, Christina Gonzales, Sabrina Stafford, Liz Marroquin, Gabrielle Cretcher, Gabrielle Beard, Beatriz Morales, Linda Nunez and Shelby Creekmore being selected for the U17 squad.

On Saturday, the U19's team had a narrow victory over Minnesota,25 points to 22. Brooke Netherland scoring a try early in the first half to get Indiana on the score sheet. This was followed by a dominating performance against Illinois winning 47 points to Nil. Allyson Walls and Christina Gonzales were brought into the U19's starting line up for this game due to minor injuries to U19 players. Sabrina Stafford and Linda Nunez were also used as substitutes playing all of the second half. Again, the Warsaw ladies contributed to the score line with tries from Brooke Netherland and Christina Gonzales and a conversion from Brooke Netherland. The U17's lost narrowly after some good play to a combined team from Michigan and Ohio by 10 points to nil.

On Sunday, the U17's team played against the Ohio U17 squad losing narrowly 15 points to 12 with Liz Marroquin scoring two tries in a highly contested game.

The highlight of the weekend was the Challenge trophy final between the only two undefeated teams Ohio and Indiana. Indiana came out the narrow victor to regain the Challenge trophy beating Ohio by 20 points to 19. There is a great rivalry between the two sides with Indiana meeting and beating Ohio in the last three championship games. Once again Allyson Walls and Christina Gonzales started for the U19 team with Linda Nunez substituting in for Christina Gonzales in the middle of the second half. Once again the Warsaw ladies contributed to the scoring with Brooke Netherland opening the scoring with a try early in the first half and Katy Cobb scoring the final winning try late in the second half to seal Indiana's victory.

The final was real barn burner with Ohio scoring in the last minute to come within one point only to hear the final whistle after the conversion attempt. It was a great weekend of rugby and comradeship for all involved. The Indiana U19 and U17 select sides next games will be on July 10th and 11th in Oakville Ontario, Canada against the Ontario regional select sides.
