Rugby Indiana Girls State Championships

Columbus 15 -Warsaw nil

The Warsaw girls wrapped up their season losing in a fiercely contested game against the state's Number 2 seed Columbus on Sunday.

"The girls played hard all game and I know from talking to the Columbus coaches they were surprised that we gave them such a tough game", said coach Trevor Cracknell. "We held them to just one try in the first half giving them just a 5 point lead. We had a lot of possessions and field position but we failed to take the few chances we had to score. A final wayward pass or a dropped ball let us down."

Columbus scored a try early in the second half and another almost at the final whistle both against the run of play.

"We put a lot of pressure on Columbus throughout the game. It was a great team performance and its hard to single out any of the players, however, Sidney Hernandez (8th Grade Lakeview) made some great runs and tackles and Liz Marroquin (Freshman) was again outstanding."

"I'm very proud of this young team. They have worked hard all season and have shown significant improvement since the start of the season. I have had a lot of fun coaching and being with them and I hope they had fun as well."

The Warsaw Girls team will play a Fall tournament season with practices starting in August. This is a good time for new players to learn about the game in a relaxed, fun environment.
