Gymnasts Fall a Bit Shy To Wawasee Warriors
Written By TSN Staff on Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Coach Jillian Shively's Lady Tigers came up just shy of the Lady Warriors under Coach Nika Prather. Nika has been coaching much longer than she ever planned to. She now has some girls that she began teaching tumbling to when they were 8. Jillian remembers what it was like competing against Nika's teams as a gymnast.
The Lady Tiger Gymnastics will compete again this Thursday down at Huntington at 6:30.

TigerSportsNation.com took a few minutes to talk to a couple Tiger gymnasts following the meet with Wawasee. Reagan Minear and Miriam Vogel are both juniors on the team.
Reagan Minear's Interview:
TSN.COM: How long have you been doing gymnastics?
REAGANM: Since I was 3, so 14 years.
TSN.COM: Was it your idea to get into it or your mom's?
REAGANM: Mine.
TSN.COM: What has kept you in it?
REAGANM: I just really like it. You can learn new skills and it's something cool you can do. You don't hear about it often so it's kind of unique.
TSN.COM: When it comes to other teams, do you guys kind of chit-chat a lot or stay on your own teams?
REAGANM: It depends on if they've done like the Y (YMCA) or if they've done USAG which is like a whole different thing. I mean if you know them, you talk to them but otherwise, you're kind of going up against them.
TSN.COM: What do you think is the hardest thing? Like a routine or move... what's the hardest?
REAGANM: The beam! Balance. It's really hard for me at least.
TSN.COM: Is that because of the height and it might be dangerous if you fall or just because it's unnerving?
REAGANM: It's unnerving. Definitely! And skills.... you have to get it exactly right or it's going to be messed up.
Miriam Vogel's Interview:
TSN.COM: Apparently there's a spirit of team work here. True or false? (Miriam was being reminded to help roll and carry mats as the interview began.)
MIRIAMV: True.
TSN.COM: So you guys all do things together?
MIRIAMV: Yeah.
TSN.COM: Both here and other places? ** MIRIAMV: Both.**
TSN.COM: So you go to teammate's house and have the bars in their back yard or just swing around on trees?
MIRIAMV: Um, no. We've never done that before.
TSN.COM: So outside of here, you probably do more fun stuff.
MIRIAMV: Yeah, we go out to dinner together sometimes and to Something Funn together.
TSN.COM: What has been the biggest event you've been to?
MIRIAMV: We have invitationals we go to and sectionals. Lakeland Invitational is probably the biggest.
TSN.COM: What is the most fun part of this?
MIRIAMV: The friends. You get along really well together and make lasting friendships. It's just amazing.
TSN.COM: Do you have GREAT plans for your senior year (next year) or just planning to enjoy it.
MIRIAMV: Just planning to enjoy it while it lasts.
TSN.COM: Have you ever gone to a larger invite and seen one person that just made you go "WOW?"
MIRIAMV: Kayla Heeter. Her dance was just amazing and beautiful. She was so tight and poised, toes were pointed on everything... just really graceful and really beautiful.
TSN.COM: Where was she from?
MIRIAMV: Freemont.
TSN.COM: Did you ask her to teach you?
MIRIAMV: No. I did talk to her, though. I work out with a lot of girls from Fort Wayne who are really amazing. They're all from Dwenger and their team is really good.
TSN.COM: So, you get more information than just here. Where would you suggest someone start? How would one get into gymnastics?
MIRIAMV: Join a class. We have girls on the team who have never done gymnastics before until they joined here. They improve a lot just in the time they're here.
