WARSAW – This weekend will be all business on the basketball courts at Wawasee and Warsaw. But in the stands and outside the arenas, the two communities will hopefully come together to service a very good cause.

Warsaw and Wawasee Athletics are coming together this week raising funds for the Steve Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, a scholarship to support either a Warsaw or Wawasee student sponsored through the Kosciusko Community Foundation.

Shirts commemorating the Warsaw and Wawasee boys and girls basketball matchups, including a maroon basketball (to symbolize the cancer, multiple myeloma) are being sold in both WCHS and WHS through the athletic departments.

Steve Jones lost his battle to Multiple Myeloma last January. The goal is to fully fund a scholarship in his memory with the Kosciusko Community Foundation.

Jones was a longtime teacher and coach at both Wawasee and Warsaw, including serving five seasons with the Warsaw football program and multiple years serving Shoop Sports Tournament of Champions. He was admired by all that knew him. His wife Lori is a third grade teacher at North Webster Elementary, and his youngest of three children, Molly, is a current junior at Wawasee where she participates in both volleyball and tennis.

The T-shirts will be sold in both athletic departments this week, and shirts will be available at Wawasee this Friday night for the boys basketball game and at Warsaw this Saturday night for the girls basketball game. For those wishing to contribute at these events, collections will be taken at these games.
