The last time the Warsaw Tiger football team finished the regular season with a single victory was 1987. As a matter of fact, the Warsaw Tiger football team has ended the season with one win ...6 times.
1920 ... 1 - 4 - 1
1924 ... 1 - 6 - 1
1933 ... 1 - 8
1959 ... 1 - 7 - 1
1965 ... 1 - 4 - 4
1987 ... 1 - 8
Make it SEVEN.
On another beautiful Friday night, in front of a larger than expected crowd, the Warsaw Tiger football team put up a valiant effort but fell short to a very, very good Concord Minutemen football team. How good was Concord this year? How about 9 - 0 good and 7 - 0 in the always tough Northern Lakes Conference.
The game started off as many of the Warsaw games have this year ....
Led by two touchdowns from their ultra talented quarterback, Anthony Yoder, Concord scored twice in the first quarter and were never really threatened. Tack on a third touchdown midway through the 2nd quarter and the Minutemen led 21 - 0.
However, with 37 seconds left until halftime something good finally happened for the Tigers. Sophmore Taylor Cone ran a fade route into the left corner of the endzone. Senior quarterback Jeremy Coppes saw that Cone was covered, but lofted a pass towards the corner. The super sophmore leaped into the air with a Concord defender wrapped around him. It looked like the Concord player had an interception but Cone fought like a Tiger and wrestled the ball away and scored his second touchdown of the season. A Scott Smyth extra point and Warsaw had life! Concord 21 Warsaw 7.
That life was short lived. Just as it looked like Warsaw was going to carry the momentum into the locker room at halftime, Smyth's kickoff was returned to the Concord 47 yard line. A 15 yard face mask penalty and the Minutemen were in business. Two plays later, Yoder found Joe Adams for a 38 yard touchdown with 13 seconds left in the half.
Halftime score :
Concord 28
Warsaw 7
Concord received the kickoff to open the second half. Not good. On the third play of the half, Yoder found Alex Sith streaking down the field and hit him with a perfect pass for another Concord touchdown.
Concord 35
Warsaw 7
The 2010 Tiger football team may not be the most talented group. Not the biggest. Not the strongest. Not the fastest.
HOWEVER, in this writer's opinion, the Tigers did something Friday night that had not been seen for the majority of the year. The Tigers showed some heart and kept fighting.
Zach Rooney's electric 53 yard run with 10:34 left in the 4th quarter showed that the Tigers are capable. A Smyth extra point .... Concord 35 Warsaw 14.
That's the way the game ended.

Zach Rooney led the Warsaw offense with an impressive 11 carries for 108 yards.
Senior Tyler Adams may not have had the numbers of Rooney, but with Concord "stacking the box," Adams banged his way with 11 carries for 36 yards. Senior quarterback Jeremy Coppes added 32 rushing yards of his own.
Warsaw's defense played hard all night and were led by tough guy Cameron Fritzel's 10 1/2 tackles.
The regular season has now ended. Every team in the state of Indiana is 0 - 0 entering the tournament next Friday night.
The Warsaw Tiger football team has been playing better. They are playing harder and with more heart as of late. In a "one and done" tournament like the way Indiana does it ... with every team in the state getting a chance to make a run at the state championship ... you never know!
The Tigers will look to get themselves a win and become half of the teams in the state who continue to play ...... instead of half of the teams who turn in their equipment.
