AUGUST 21

With the graduation of Jordan Scroggs and Trevor Callahan last spring, Warsaw junior Jacob Poyner now takes over the role as Tiger front-runner.

At Saturday's Huntington Invitational, Poyner also garnered the role as the area front-runner.

"He's the hardest working athlete besides Amy Yoder that I've ever worked with," Warsaw coach Jim Mills said about Poyner. "He brings our other guys up a whole notch."

Poyner, who placed 16th last season at the invite in 17:12, cut a minute off his time Saturday and ran down Homestead's Max Silcox over the last 400 meters to win in 16:12. His move, after breaking away from an earlier pack that included Silcox, Carroll's Alex Hess, and DeKalb Invitational champion Tyler Herber of Fremont, was similar to how Carroll's Brad Hess pushed up the final hill and outran teammate James Martin and Homestead's Kodi Mullins last year.

Team wise Warsaw placed third with 80 points, 29 behind Carroll and Homestead but 55 ahead of perennial powerhouse West Noble.

Here are the Warsaw Varsity results:
