What a difference a year makes.
Rivalries are one of the best parts of competitive sports. The anticipation of playing your biggest enemy. Looking forward to playing physical games against a team that is only a few minutes down the road. The opportunity to hold bragging rights. Every aspect of a good old-fashioned rivalry just breathes an extra breath of life into athletes on game day.
Much like the Yankees/Red Sox, Bears/Packers, or Carolina/Duke, Thursday night was one of these rivalry games in Indiana high school basketball.
Warsaw vs. Plymouth.
In what had been a brutal power struggle for supremacy over the previous ten seasons, the Tigers were looking to continue their recent dominance. In the previous ten games between these two schools leading up to the Nic Moore era, Warsaw had beaten Plymouth six times. The Pilgrims held bragging rights four times.
Nic Moore and the 2011 Tigers however, entered this contest having never lost to their US 30 West rival. Moore, Joey Sparkman, Brock Davis, Jalen Roscoe, Travis Thomas, and Chris O'Hara were looking to do what no other Warsaw Tiger senior class had done since 1992 (almost 20 years ago) -- beat the Plymouth Pilgrims four consecutive years.
And beat them they did!
From the onset, Warsaw punished Plymouth with precise offensive execution and relentless defensive pressure. The Tigers simply destroyed their rival in every aspect of this contest.
Warsaw's 72-27 victory was their largest margin of victory (45 points) in more than 19 years. Warsaw beat South Bend LaSalle 101-49 for a 52-point shellacking back in November of 1992.
Wow.
The victory secured a 2nd consecutive Northern Lakes Conference outright title for the Tigers. Ironically Elkhart Memorial, who beat Warsaw last Friday night, gave the Tigers the outright NLC trophy by beating Northwood 63-57 Thursday night in Elkhart.
Coach Doug Ogle's squad has not lost a NLC contest on the road over the last 3 seasons. For those of you that know how tough the Northern Lakes Conference is -- you can appreciate the magnitude of that accomplishment.
Here is a look at the NLC standings for 2011:
| Warsaw | 6-1 |
| Elkhart Memorial | 5-2 |
| Northwood | 4-2 |
| Concord | 4-2 |
| Wawasee | 3-3 |
| Plymouth | 2-5 |
| Northridge | 1-5 |
| Goshen | 1-6 |
Congratulations Coach Ogle and the entire 2011 NLC Champion Warsaw Tiger Boy's basketball program!
