As the 2010-2011 regular season winds down, the Warsaw Tigers are beginning to find another gear.

Tuesday night the South Bend Clay Colonials traveled to the Tiger Den to battle the Class 4A #6-ranked Tigers.

Warsaw had won 10 out of their last 11 games coming into this game with SB Clay. For a two week stretch during January, Coach Doug Ogle's team looked less than dominate even though they were winning games. The past three games however have been nothing short of spectacular for the 9 year veteran coach and his talented group of basketball players.

This game was more of the same brilliance. Warsaw stormed out of the gates to take immediate control of this mid-week game.

Tiger superstar guard, Nic Moore (a.k.a. Sir Sic Nic), was simply unbelievable in the first quarter.

Sir Sic Nic accounted for all 22 first period points in some form or fashion. Moore scored 16 points in every imaginable way. He was knocking down long range three point bombs, nailing pull up jumpers, and finishing drives to the basket. On top of that, Moore dished out three assists to open teammates as the Tigers opened an early 9 point advantage.

End of Quarter One: Warsaw 22 - SB Clay 13

Warsaw continued to keep its foot on the pedal. Junior Jordyn Coon dominated the second quarter. He had that quiet confidence working. Coon drained a few deep jumpers before doing what he does best - snag offensive and defensive rebounds. Jordyn has a special gift combined with a unique skill set to understand where the basketball will fall after a missed shot. To watch him sky for boards is definitely worth the price of admission - a true art form that young ball players should learn from.

Again Warsaw dominated a quarter to open up a 17 point halftime advantage.

Halftime Score: Warsaw 43 - SB Clay 26

The Bomb Squad was released on the Colonials in the second half. What is the Bomb Squad you ask? A better question would be "Who are the members of the Bomb Squad?" The answer is easy. Show up to the next Tiger Basketball game and witness the trio of spot shooters that are catching passes from Nic Moore as Sir Sic Nic escapes the double teams that most coaches are starting to employ.

Juniors Jay Holladay and Rhett Kesler combine with super-Sophomore Jared Bloom to give Warsaw a trio of sharpshooters that wreak havoc on opposing defenses. On this night it was Holladay swishing 2 three point bombs. Kesler and Bloom followed in Jay's footsteps by netting their own downtown splashes.

On the night Warsaw converted 8 of 18 (44%) from the land of milk and honey. The Tigers have been really good all season long from three point land. Any coach that focuses on Moore and Lucas Grose (Warsaw's two leading scorers) are simply inviting the Bomb Squad to have their way. Overall this year's Tiger team is a more talented group of three point shooters than the State team of last season.

While South Bend Clay was having zero luck trying to stay with the high-octane Tigers, the Colonials did have a few players who played well. Jarod Wooden and Taron Miller both scored 17 points to lead their team. But you need more than two players to beat one of the state's elite basketball teams in their home gym in front of the largest crowd your team sees all year. The Colonials were simply overmatched.

The Colonials were given a show by the home team. Warsaw played one of its best all around team games of the year to blowout SB Clay by 23 points.

Final Score: Warsaw 79 - SB Clay 56

Nic Moore was really good tonight. Sir Sic Nic continued to show why he is getting so much attention across the state of Indiana. The Fox28 television cameras were able to capture this Mr. Basketball-like performance for their Northern Indiana audience who faithfully checks in on Warsaw's elite star. In case you didn't get a chance to catch the highlights, here are the complete game statistics for #11:

The entire state of Indiana is talking about Nic Moore and his chances of becoming the 3rd Warsaw Tiger to win the prestigious honor of Indiana Mr. Basketball. If selected, Moore would join Jeff Grose (1985) and Kevin Ault (1996) as Tiger Basketball recipients of the state's highest individual award. Nic recently passed Jeff Grose on the all-time scoring list and stands just 163 points shy Kevin Ault's #1 spot in the record books at WCHS.

The Tigers will now travel to Fort Wayne Friday night to battle the Class 2A #5 ranked Bishop Luers Knights. The Knights are an impressive 14-4 on the season and only 1 of those losses occurred on their home floor.

The Luers gymnasium only holds 2,500 fans and tickets are selling fast. This is a BIG game for both teams and Bishop Luers will be ready to strike revenge on the Tigers. Warsaw was 1 of only 2 teams (Lawrence North the other) to beat the Knights and last year's Mr. Basketball, DeShaun Thomas in consecutive seasons.

Over that time period Bishop Luers won 37 basketball games including a state championship title. The atmosphere will be electric! Call the Warsaw Athletic Department if you do not have a ticket as they are on sale this week for $5 each.
