WARSAW - The Warsaw Tigers took the state's top-ranked to the wire before falling 62-56 in the championship of the Teacher's Credit Union Holiday Tournament at the Tiger Den on Tuesday. Hamilton Southeastern overcame a brilliant comeback effort by hitting their free throws down the stretch.
The Tigers - fighting back from a 14-point deficit - took the lead on two occasions in the third quarter. Warsaw was led by Lindsay Baker's 25 points, five rebounds and five steals. Sarah Heagy had 11 points, five rebounds, and four steals, and Brooklyn Harrison had seven points, three assists, and three steals. Jennifer Walker Crawford had three assists and Madi Davis had two steals and two assists.
The Tigers fell to 9-2 while Hamilton Southeastern improved to 12-0.
Warsaw fell behind Perry Meridian in the first round by 10 in the first half, but the second half belonged to the Tigers and the inside punch of Heagy and the outside touch of Baker. Warsaw rallied for a 62-49 victory over the Falcons behind a combined 44 points from the pair.
Baker finished with a game-high 25 points, five rebounds and four steals. Heagy had 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Lauren Burish provided a needed spark with 10 points and six rebounds, Eryn Leek had five assists, and Melanie Holladay had seven rebounds.
The junior varsity fell 32-25 to Perry Meridian in the first round, and lost 34-18 to South Bend Washington in the second game. Jackie Ferguson led the Tigers with six points in the opener, while Megan Kratzsch, Pam Miller, and Erin Clemens each had four points. Gabby Monroy led Warsaw with seven points in the consolation game.
