Kayla Stout Leads Lady Tigers Back to Winning Ways
Written By TSN Staff on Sunday, January 10, 2010
A night after the Warsaw boys team traveled North to battle the Northridge Raiders, the Warsaw Lady Tigers would host the Lady Raiders at the Tiger Den.
Coach Michelle Harter's Lady Tigers started the season with 9 consecutive wins. She then saw her squad drop their last two contests. The first defeat was at the hands of a physically strong Perry Meridian team during the TCU Holiday Tourney. The second loss came Tuesday night at Marion versus the Lady Giants.
At first glance, the schedule did not look any easier with Northridge coming to town. The Lady Raiders brought an impressive 9-3 record with them into the Tiger Den. They also were perfect in the NLC conference with victories over Concord & Goshen.
The Lady Tigers needed a fast start to ensure themselves of returning to their winning ways.
Senior guard Kelci Freds took the first shot for Warsaw. Fred's 20 foot 3-pointer touched nothing but net to give the Lady Tigers a 3-0 lead right out of the gate.
Junior forward Kayla Stout took over the rest of the quarter for Warsaw. Stout connected on her first four attempts from the floor on her way to scoring 8 first quarter points.
Senior guard Cendall Ogle scored on a floater in the lane to round out the scoring for the Lady Tigers through six minutes of action.
Though Northridge did not shoot particularly well in the quarter they were able to stay within striking distance of the Lady Tigers.
End of First Quarter: Warsaw 13 - Northridge 7
The second quarter belonged to Warsaw. The Lady Tigers converted an astounding 60% of their shot attempts in the period as they outscored the Lady Raiders 19-8.
Kelci Freds drained two 3-point bombs for Warsaw. After Freds the second long jump shot, Northridge's head coach called a timeout. As two of the referees gathered together at the baseline, one ref looked to the other and said "Man, she doesn't even give the defense time to react to her shot. She's good." Obviously, the referees were just figuring out what Tiger Fans already know in regards to Kelci's abilities.
While Freds was busy from the outside, Kayla Stout continued to dominate the paint. Stout scored another 6 points in the quarter to give her 14 for the first half of action.
Freds scored 7 points in the quarter to finish the half with 10. Senior Kaelee Sands scored 4 second quarter points on two beautiful driving lay-ins. The first from the right elbow and the 2nd from the left wing as she finished with her left hand.
Beth Plummer also scored 2 points in the frame on a nice feed from Stout.
Northridge managed just 4 field goals as they trailed by 17 points at the break.
End of first half: Warsaw 32 - Northridge 15
The Tigers opened the 3rd period with an impressive 10-3 run to gain their largest lead of the night(22 points) at 42-18 with 4:32 on the clock.
Again, it was Kayla Stout who could not be stopped in the middle. Stout scored 6 third quarter points to give her a running total of 20 thru three quarters.
Seniors Sarah Shilling and Kelci Freds scored a basket each to complete the run for the Lady Tigers.
End of 3rd Quarter: Warsaw 42 - Northridge 20
Northridge would outscore the Lady Tigers in the final frame 11-8, but not before Stout would finish off her big night.
Stout scored inside the paint and drew a foul before leaving the game for the Lady Tigers. She converted the free throw giving her 23 points on 11 of 18 shooting for the contest. Kayla led the team in rebounds as well with 8 boards on the night. An impressive way to get your team back in the win column...for sure!
Kelci Freds rained in her fourth 3-pointer in the quarter. Freds finished with 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting (4 for 7 from downtown). Kelci also dished out 5 assists for Warsaw.
Ryesha Jackson threw a beautiful pass to fellow sophomore Creigh Ogle as Ogle converted to round out the scoring for Warsaw.
Complete Scoring for Warsaw:
Kayla Stout - 23, Kelci Freds - 15, Kaelee Sands - 4, Cendall Ogle - 2, Creigh Ogle - 2, Beth Plummer - 2
Final Score: Warsaw 50 - Northridge 31
The victory improved the Lady Tiger record to 10-2 (3-0 NLC) on the season. Warsaw will travel to Fort Wayne Carrol Wednesday the 13th before traveling to NLC foe Goshen Saturday night the 16th. Warsaw sits atop the NLC with a perfect record as they try to capture the conference championship crown.
Great win ladies! We are ready to cover the next winning streak...
