Homestead Utilizes 3-Point Shot To Outlast Tigers Friday Night 67-65
Written By TSN Staff on Sunday, December 4, 2011
A battle of undefeated teams took place in the Tiger Den Friday night to open the home basketball season schedule. The 3-0 Homestead Spartans traveled to Warsaw to face the 2-0 Tigers in what promised to be a great early season match up.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 12-3 advantage behind their star player Lucas Grose. Grose scored early (7 quick points) and often for the Tigers on this night.
Homestead responded with a 6-2 run to close the first quarter gap to 14-9 after the first eight minutes of play.
Warsaw super-sophomore Jordan Stookey, who earned his first Varsity start on this night, scored the first 5 points of the second period for the Tigers. Warsaw owned a 19-10 lead after Stookey's scoring binge.
Tiger senior Jordyn Coon hit 2 three-point bombs from the left wing to give Warsaw its largest lead of the night 28-17 with 2:34 left in the first half. Homestead answered in a big way.
The Spartans closed the half on a 11-4 run. Warsaw's lead had dwindled to four after two full frames.
HALFTIME SCORE: Warsaw 32 - Homestead 28
Homestead began the 3rd period the same way they ended the first half. The Spartans scored a quick 12 points to just 2 by the home team over the first 4 minutes of the second half. Suddenly the visiting team had a 40-34 advantage over the Tigers.
Zach Terrell, Seth Coate, and Nick Gamble connected on big three-point baskets to fuel the 23-6 Spartan run that span a total of 7 minutes. When the dust had settled, Warsaw was on their heels looking for some sort of answer.
Homestead led 47-44 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Lucas Grose did his best to keep the Tigers close. The 6'6" senior knocked home a pair of long-range shots to go with a handful of dominate power moves to the basket. Homestead seemed to have slowed Lucas in the 3rd quarter, but Grose was not to be denied in the final quarter. He ended the contest with a game-high 25 points.
In the end however, it was the 3-point shooting of the visiting Spartans that proved too much to overcome for the Tigers. That and solid free throw shooting down the stretch propelled Homestead to its 4th win of the season.

The victory improved Homestead's record to 4-0 while the Tigers fell to 2-1. Warsaw will turn right around and host Huntington North Saturday night at the Tiger Den.
